Gouache Underpainting with Soft Pastels Workshop

I'm delighted to be running my Gouache Underpainting with Soft Pastels Workshop at the Harbour Arts Centre, Irvine. This workshop was originally planned for last year but had to be postponed, so I'm thrilled to finally be able to share this exciting technique with you.

If you already have some experience with soft pastels and are looking to develop your skills, this full-day workshop will introduce you to the creative possibilities of combining gouache with pastel.

Using gouache as an underpainting allows you to add colour, tone and composition quickly while creating extra tooth and texture for your pastels to grip. The combination of wet and dry media produces expressive, vibrant paintings, with visible brushstrokes adding depth, energy and character to the finished artwork.

During the morning session, we'll create our gouache underpaintings, exploring colour, value and mark-making. After a relaxing lunch break while the paintings dry, we'll spend the afternoon applying soft pastels to transform the underpaintings into finished artworks full of colour, texture and life.

What to Bring

• Your own set of soft pastels
• A selection of paintbrushes in various sizes (helpful but not essential)
