Gouache Underpainting with Soft Pastels Workshop

Where: Harbour Arts Centre, Irvine

If you already have some experience with soft pastels and are looking to develop your skills, this full-day workshop will introduce you to the creative possibilities of combining gouache with pastel.

Using gouache as an underpainting allows you to add colour and composition quickly while creating extra tooth and texture for your pastels to grip. The combination of wet and dry media produces expressive, vibrant paintings, with visible brushstrokes adding depth and character to the finished artwork.

During the morning session, we'll create our gouache underpaintings, exploring colour and mark-making. We'll then break for lunch while the paintings dry and continue in the afternoon, applying soft pastels to transform the underpaintings into finished artworks full of colour and texture.

What to Bring

• Your own set of soft pastels
• A few paintbrushes (helpful but not essential)
